How to Legally Obtain a Free Digital Copy of The Conditionalist Faith of Our Fathers

If you’ve studied conditionalism at any length, chances are you’ve run across LeRoy Froom’s classic two-volume treatment of the subject. Unfortunately, the book is no longer in print and hard to come by–although you can currently get a used copy on Amazon for the low price of $325 🙂

Fortunately, the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists has made the book freely available through their Office of Archives and Statistics. Unfortunately, obtaining the book is more complicated than simply downloading a file. It’s not too difficult, however; just follow these instructions (sorry, Windows only):

Note: The digital version was scanned from a used copy, so there are some notes and underlining, but the text is never obscured.

1. If you don’t have it already, download and install Firefox.
2. Download and install the DjVu Browser Plug-in, found here.
3. Download and install WinDjView, found here. Click the link right after the text that says “Looking for the latest version?” Once installed you should probably reboot.
4. Go here:
5. Click the Volume 1 link. There are two files: one is a black and white scan, the other is color. Note that the color version is approximately 12 times larger, and will take that much longer to download.
6. Simply click the version you want. DO NOT right-click and save; that will not work.
7. The file should now open within Firefox, if you correctly installed the browser plug-in in step 2.
8. Click the save button (diskette icon) to save a copy locally. Choose “bundled”.
9. Now you can double click your local copy, and it should automatically open using the DjVu viewer you installed in step 3.
10. Go back to the link in step 4 and repeat the process for volume 2.

If you have trouble, let me know in the comments.

This worked for me. I had never heard of the book before. I was about to print it, and then I saw the thousands of pages which comprise it. Holy cow!

  2. Greg says:

I followed your instructions above but when I open the files in Firefox it says there are over a thousand pages in each one but they are all blank. I have downloaded everything about 3 times and still cannot see the pages. Also did it in IE.

It sounds like there may not have been PDF files there before. But there are now.
